Hi Roger,

Good article! We must also look at the trauma inflicted by members of our own LGBT community as a source of CPTSD. Check out this article:

Keep fighting the good fight, Roger.

I am 79 and recently had two separate psychiatrists diagnose recently me with cPTSD. I have had over 4 years of psychotherapy with a Jungian-based therapist. I have had 2 separate admissions to psychiatric units, both for two weeks, for alcohol and benzodiazepine dependency. I knew I was "gay" from early adolescence, and hid it throughout medical school, and most of my professional life as a doctor. I spent about 20 years as a devout Catholic trying to "pray away the gay"; I am now bitterly anti-religious. So far, thankfully no suicide attempts despite suicidal ideation.

"Keeping any secret is hard. We talked about having to hide a part of “who you are” in certain situations is very hard and damaging to one’s self-image." I know you wrote this specific to children in foster care but, in my experience, this is something many people struggling with their sexual identity/gender go through. For some I'd imagine that hiding part or all of who they are never ends. I am not LGBTQIA+ however I lived in a family where it was safer to not let them see any weaknesses or flaws so I know what it's like to have to hide in plain sight. One of my older brothers is a homosexual male and he lived his entire childhood and much of his adult life living a double life and I have a nephew, also homosexual, who endured such bullying when he came out that he was forced to change schools and this was in 2013. I share my story to thank you for having the courage to share your lived experience, because it helps people know they are not alone. You said that you didn't even call police about the vandalism at the bar because your thought was this is normal but also I'm guessing you might have been concerned if police would have been supportive or dismissive, another trauma many people just overlook because sadly it's an unknown...
