I count every thing i do. When I am walking I count my steps. It seems as if I always get to 100 and keep counting. If I slice a vegetable I count. I did not have a childhood trauma but I have Had many difficult health problems. I am Positive mine is from stress But I wish I could stop doing it.> It drives me craz and I am glad I am not alone with this. I wish everyone a good outcome with your particular situation.

For as long as I recall, I double numbers in my head 1, 2, 4, 8, 16….
But when I get to 16 sometimes I subtract 1 to make it 15….
But more often doubling 16 becomes 31 (32 subtracting 1)…..
Don’t know why 16 can become 15 or why 32 becomes 31…..it feels right and seems to relate to some form of pattern…..
I can find myself doing it continually for quite a while and it seems to coincide with me twitching my fingers at the same time….tonight I found this sidecars decided to share!

My counting is always by 2's. If I come across tiles that are an odd number, I'm constantly just counting over and over 2,4,6,8,10...until I find windows, cracks , rocks ext that end up being an even number set....n continue again with my counting by 2's

I count to seven in a rhythm that sounds like a song in my head. I can’t see calendars easily because of dyscalculia, or charts and graphs. So I count to seven for each week to figure out what day of the week something is.

Also I count to seven or nine on each hand touching each finger in equally symmetrical directions for example from thumb to pinky and back again on right hand, then from thumb to pinky on left hand. If I do anything extra unintended on one side, I have a compulsion to balance it out on the other. The song for counting to five or nine sounds like this in my head, “Do, re, mi, fa, mi, re, do.” (I don’t hear it. I “think” the notes. I was super good at ear training in college for music therapy. But writing music, almost impossible. I can read Treble Clef to sing alto. I can sight-read very well.

I turn words into equations. Where every letter has a number value. A=1, B=2, etc. I then take the highest value letter in the word, and see how I can arrange the other letters to equal that amount. Like the word "date" A(1) × T(20)=20. So then D(4)×E(5)=T(20).

I've tried to explain this to people and no one understands how or why I do it. To be honest I didn't even know what it might be.

Hi Linda
I hope you don’t mind me reaching out but your post made me so emotional tonight. I could relate to all of it, so much so it was like reading a description of me. I count letters in words and turn them into numbers which have to end evenly, and will keep adding words and dividing by 2 until an even number. I’ve done this for as long as I can remember but only recently made a link to my experiences of childhood trauma. I didn’t do well at school but attended college as an adult and managed to get through uni but was a struggle. I always felt a massive fraud as nothing seemed to really sink in. Anyway I just wanted to say I was sorry to hear of your experiences but wanted to thank you for sharing them as it’s helped me so so much. I no longer feel as alone xxx

I’d like to hear more? Add my Snapchat? I’d actually love to understand your experience?

I count anything square or circle and try to make it equal something in 5s.. I never thought it had a meaning but I've been doing this for as long as I can remember..
