This blog post really resonated with me. It’s heartbreaking to see how religion, which is intended to provide comfort and community, can sometimes lead to trauma instead. Your insights on how to navigate these complex feelings are incredibly valuable. Thank you for shedding light on such an important topic!

Thank you for shedding light on such an important and often overlooked topic. Your insights on the intersection of religion and trauma resonate deeply, and it's crucial to discuss how certain religious experiences can lead to CPTSD. I appreciate the resources you’ve provided for those seeking help and understanding. It’s empowering to know we’re not alone in navigating these complex emotions.

Religion and Trauma can get even more complicated.

As a 14 year old in 1979, I went through some bullying and a violent sexual assault(I am male, the organizer of the attach was female). I ended up shutting down emotions, walling off memories. (PTSD, CPTSD) I am lucky in that I earned an MS in CS from Purdue Univ and did not go down the route of Alcohol, drugs etc.

In 1994, I started attending what seemed to be a benign non denominational bible church(fundamentalist). I got attached to a young lady, but started experiencing triggers, anxiety, etc. I had not really tried to date since one time in high school (1981). The young lady at the church started trying to put me on a guilt trip (gas lighting). This before CPTSD was widely understood. The BS religious dogma could have triggered a suicide. I sought out help from a more liberal church. I needed expert mental health help. The second liberal church talked to people at the first church and told me that I had a spiritual problem. I had not talked to anyone at the second church first hand about anything going through my mind. The second church did not really reach out to me directly.

In cases of things like CPTSD, most pastors, church counselors, etc just have no concept of what is going on.

The experience with the church and a failed relationship(good thing) just made it harder to confront, and process the emotions that I had bottled up.
They tried to discourage use of a new anti-depressant that was sold as Zoloft.

Most Evangelical/Fundamental Christian churches are a poor place for support for such issues.

The religious dogma gets in the way of being able to offer real help or refer to real help.
