Thank you Rebekah for sharing this—I can’t wait to read part II. I thought I was the only person who took 5 decades to put a halt on contact with abusive parents. No surprise we’re both Southerners!

I would add one more reason—we are all taught that the world is fair, that good things happen when you’re good, and that bad things happen when you’re bad. It’s not true. It’s never been true. But we believe it, so when we’re a victim of abuse, it has to be a failure on our part. And then, everything you mention piles on top of that core belief.
